OPEN Digital Residency Program – Announcements

Blitz Valletta is a contemporary independent art, not-for-profit space that supports original and radical artistic practice in all its forms since 2013, through an international program of residencies, exhibitions and public engagement activities. Blitz Valletta is pleased to launch an open call for three digital artistic residencies that will take place in 2022 and to extend OPEN, an online platform founded in 2020, aiming to further develop Blitz Valletta’s activities in the virtual space and to explore the latest trends and research. in the digital landscape. The international open call is exclusive to young graduates – from 2017 – with no age limit and for this first edition a residency will be awarded to a Maltese artist to support our local artistic community.

New OPEN Digital Residency Program will extend Blitz’s commitment to contemporary art, both locally and internationally, through cross-fertilization between artists and professionals in the digital landscape – from virtual reality to gaming and blockchain technologies – which have grown considerably developed in Malta over the past decade. With a particular interest in the circulation of art beyond physical spaces, our digital program makes Blitz Valletta a post-study online training ground and an experimental production space. Each selected artist will participate in a bespoke international mentoring program and receive a grant of EUR 2,000 to develop a new digital artwork in collaboration with the Blitz curatorial team. The research and production phase will last one month, followed by an online exhibition lasting two months.

In eight years of activities, Blitz has organized several exhibitions, but also conferences, workshops, commissions and conferences, including a three-year residency project (2015-2018) which received the mentions of ArtBasel crowdfunding initiative and Tate Art Exchange Program. Since 2019, Blitz has launched a new curated program that reflects the institution’s commitment to supporting Malta-based artists abroad, while engaging with international artists at home. The Blitz exhibition program presented, for the first time in Malta, the work of international artists such as Cory Arcangel, John Coplans, Sara Cwynar, Jesse Darling, Eva Kotátková, Simon Fujiwara, Adrian Paci, Rob Pruitt, Amalia Ulman and Tobias Zielony, alongside Maltese artists including Kane Cali, Charlie Cauchi and Pierre Portelli. Their work is a portal to rethink the limits of artistic creation while exploring the major questions of contemporary existence.

In response to a recently altered reality, Blitz decided to operate in three spaces that are equally relevant to their community: online through OPEN, in physical galleries and in the city of Valletta. OPEN embraces the possibilities offered by removing physical distance and geographic boundaries from online platforms. Through this unlimited virtual space, Blitz explores the ability of art to redefine the collective imagination locally and internationally and to connect Malta’s computer landscape with international artistic practice. Through this new program, we also continue to expand Blitz’s dialogue with young audiences and future generations.
