“Pea-nuts” for the mazapan latte; Café Cocol opens in Socorro

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Cafe Cocol is a new hacienda-style cafe in Socorro that’s looking to bring people from all over to try their staple mazapan latte.

Located on Socorro Road in Hacienda Apodaca, Café Cocol opened just a few weeks ago after beginning preparations last year.

KTSM reported in September 2021; owner Lizbeth Carlos explained what made her think of the name “Cocol”.

She explained that her grandfather used to ask for his coffee by saying “dame mi cocol”, and it stayed with her as a memory that she will always remember with pleasure; having afternoon coffee with his grandparents.

Their menu consists mostly of breakfast and lunch items, like their unique croissant sandwiches with creamy tomato soup.

However, their staple dishes are served in a cup like their Abuelita latte and Mazapan latte.

“We have the Abuelita latte. It will be a choco latte, and then we will have a mazapan latte that people have gone crazy for,” she explained.

Carlos said they also plan to add beer and wine to their beverage repertoire and new dinner-style dishes this year.

The space is quite open and allows you to walk around freely and admire the interior of the old hacienda.

Because of this, Carlos said they also use it as a gallery space for local artists to exhibit their work, which is also available for purchase.

“I like to mention it as the new artistic neighborhood of Socorro,” Carlos said.

She explained that their goal is to start holding farmers’ markets once the weather warms up.
