Petoskey Library receives grant from National Endowment for the Arts

PETOSKEY – The Petoskey District Library is one of 61 organizations nationwide selected to receive a 2021-2022 NEA Big Read grant.

A $ 5,000 grant will support a community reading program focused on Joy Harjo’s “An American Sunrise” from March to May 2022. An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read expands our understanding of our world, our communities and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.

“We are delighted to have received the NEA Big Read grant. This is a wonderful opportunity for the library to explore and develop partnerships, develop literacy, strengthen community and find new ways to bring people together after a difficult year, ”said Sarah Biskup, Librarian of the programming of the Petoskey District Library.

“For 15 years, NEA Big Read has supported opportunities for communities to come together around a book, creating a shared experience that encourages openness and conversations about issues central to our lives,” said Ann Eilers, Acting President of the National Endowment for the Arts. .

“We congratulate the Petoskey District Library for receiving a NEA Big Read grant and look forward to a wide variety of meaningful community events.”

The NEA Big Read offers a range of titles that reflect many different voices and perspectives, aimed at inspiring conversation and discovery. The Library’s Chosen Big Reading Is An American Sunrise is a collection of poems written by the first Native American poet laureate, Joy Harjo. Copies of the book will be available at the library’s launch event in March 2022.

Also in 2022, the library and its partners will offer a series of programs, including discussions on books, lectures, art workshops, films, and more. go. Project partners to date include Crooked Tree Arts Center, Good Hart Artist Residency, Harbor Springs Festival of the Book, Little Traverse Bay Bands Niigaandiwin Education Department, Little Traverse Literary Guild, and North Central Michigan College.
