Philbrook Museum features art made by Oklahoma children

Thousands of Oklahoma children have created works of art that are currently on display at the Philbrook Museum. Curators tell News On 6’s Sawyer Buccy that the space is for people of all ages to take time to appreciate the spirit of a child.

“We’re seeing an absolute explosion of children’s creativity,” said Big Show co-curator Jenny Fisher.

There’s a room right now at the Philbrook Museum that’s all about kids.

“It’s The Big Show, and it lives up to its name,” Fisher said.

An exhibit comprised of thousands of artworks created by Oklahoma children ages 4-18.

“Our free themes are art inspired by nature or the outdoors, art that comes from your imagination, and art that shows you or your community,” Fisher said.

This space aims to elevate children’s voices, give children an opportunity to express themselves, and then give those expressions a platform.

“In the way that they explore the depths of the emotions in some of the things that have happened over the past two years, it’s very touching and to be able to show that and share that with people, it’s just an honor, “Fisher said.

Quotes from children are also painted on the walls and their interviews broadcast on videos.

There is also a space where everyone can add a little something of their own.

“It’s a blank one-room canvas where, for the first time in a museum that I’ve seen, we say, ‘Here’s a colored pencil, draw on the walls…you can even draw on the floor. “”, Fisher said.

They have thought of almost everything.

“We have binoculars because, as you can see, the artwork goes way up the wall,” Fisher said.

There’s a quote that says, “If we experienced life through the eyes of a child, everything would be magical and extraordinary,” and maybe that’s the point of this exhibit for adults. .. a reminder to make room in our lives for the magical and the extraordinary in the midst of the mundane.

“Looking around and seeing these walls full of art, I feel hopeful and joyful,” Fisher said.

The exhibition ends on May 8 — the day before there will be a special event for families.
