The Empire State Building hosts the annual race, presented by Turkish Airlines and powered by the Challenged Athletes Foundation

NEW YORK, October 7, 2022 /CNW/ — The Empire State Building (ESB) today hosted the 44e Annual Run-Up, presented by Turkish Airlines and powered by Challenged Athletes Foundation (CIF). In several designated rounds, 374 runners from around the world climbed the 1,576 steps to reach the finishing line on the iconic Building 86e Ground Observatory.

“We are inspired every year by the athletes around the world who train and compete in this ultimate test of endurance,” said Jean-Yves Ghazipresident of the Empire State Building Observatory. “A big congratulations to all who came to the “The most famous building in the world“to participate in state of the empire Building launch.”

Soh Wai Ching of Malaysia took first place in the Elite Men category with a time of 10:44, finishing ahead of Ryoji Watanabe of Japan and Fabio Ruga of Italy. This is ESBRU’s second straight win for the 28-year-old.

“I’m so happy to be here to compete again. This is my second win and I improved my time,” said Wai Ching. “I hope to be back next year and improve my time [again].”

Cindy Harris of Indianapolis, In. finished first in the Women’s Elite heat with a time of 13:56, ahead of Shari Klarfeld of Plainview, NY and Maria Elisa La Pez Pimentel of Mexico. It was Harris’ 24e Run-Up and sixth victory. She beat her 2021 time by 14:01.

“I feel really good and very lucky to be doing this for so long,” Harris said. “[Running this race] means a lot, especially this competition because it was very tight.”

Host “Catfish” Nev Schulman ran in this year’s celebrity heat. Other rounds of the race featured commercial real estate brokers, Empire State Building tenants and members of the media.

Challenged Athletes Foundation was the official charity partner of ESBRU with a designated race for struggling athletes and CAF supporters to raise funds to support those with physical difficulties and their access to sport. CAF athlete Anthony Smitha Iraq veteran with an arm amputee, finished the race with a time of 56:05.

Turkish Airlines, Turkey the national flag carrier and airline that flies to more countries and international destinations than any other, has returned for its fourth year as the Run-Up’s title sponsor.
