The Southeast Texas Art Museum presents its 2022 protege.

Besides being an art contest, it was a career development opportunity.

BEAUMONT, Texas — The Protege Competition and Exhibit held its 36th annual art competition Tuesday night at the Museum of Art of Southeast Texas.

This is a contest and exhibit featuring 12th grade performers from Southeast Texas.

Besides being an art contest, it was a career development opportunity.

In preparation for this year’s competition, 66 entries were submitted by 12 schools, all within an 80-mile radius of the art museum.

Artist Kurt Dyrhaug has selected 18 high school student artwork for this year’s competition.

Curator of Education Programs Christle Feagin has said each year that she is amazed by the artwork submitted by students.

“So I mean they emotionally invoke each one of them. It’s surprising that they haven’t gone to art school yet that they produce this level of artwork,” said Fagin.

At the end of the event, three winners of the Lamar Art Department Scholarships were announced, along with three honorable mentions and a special teacher award.

The students’ works will remain on display for a month at the museum.

Then he will visit four local schools, including Lamar University, for an opening reception.
